History

picThough the DGPP was founded in 1983, the Phoniatrics & Pedaudiology as a medical subspeciality reviews decades of fruitful scientific and clinical work in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It can be roughly compared to "Medical Speech-Language-Hearing Pathology" including voice and swallowing disorders in other countries, having it's roots in Otorhinolaryngology. In 1992, Phoniatrics & Pedaudiology became a new self-standing medical discipline in Germany.

The scientific and clinical work of Phoniatrics & Pedaudiology concentrates on diagnostics and treatment of voice disorders, hearing disorders including infant hearing screening, speech-language disorders, central auditory perception deficits, acquired speech-language disorders (e.g., aphasia, dysarthria), and swallowing disorders. Phoniatrics & Pedaudiology cooperates with otorhinolaryngology, pediatrics, neurology, craniofacial surgery, psychology, education, logopedics, acoustics, and other disciplines.
